E-Dude Teaches When You Can Use Cheap VoIP ADSL

Using VoIP ADSL for your business VoIP phone service should be in a word, Bullet-Proof. VoIP phone services are still a relatively new technology, yet for business it holds the promise of saving money and increasing employee efficiency.

Add to this that like anything else, the marketplace is fraught with nonperforming products and services as well as under-performing VoIP ADSL technology, and implementing VoIP can sometimes be technically challenging, frustrating and expensive.

So here then we'll review in depth using VoIP ADSL and the need for symmetrical download and upload bandwidth on our business-class Internet connection to do "business class VoIP"
All right, so let's take a look at the real nuts and bolts of why VoIP ADSL and cable modems many times simply may not work for the business VoIP phone service need.

The very nature of technologies such as VoIP ADSL is that they were originally designed primarily for the residential market and introduced to the business market as a cheap way to do Internet browsing and send and receive e-mail. Visit my VoIP Problems Pageto learn more about this particular issue.

This Stuff Really Wasn't Designed For
"Mission Critical" Business Use

Because they were designed primarily for people only browsing the Internet, when you think about it, it only makes sense the download speeds are going to be much greater than the upload speeds. This is because the average user really has little or no need for upload capability TO the Internet, except maybe for some outbound e-mail.

I mean how much outbound e-mail can an average person send in a residential or small-business setting? Consider also of course it really doesn't matter when or how fast the e-mail gets out because eventually it will be pushed up to the Internet and then ultimately arrive at its destination.

Who Cares How Long It Takes?
Your VoIP Call Does - That's Who!

When sending e-mail, it really doesn't matter how long it takes and nobody's paying any attention. So 1/2 a millisecond, 2 milliseconds or a half a second really are of no consequence in the typical "casual user" scenario described above. As we'll see in a moment not so with VoIP business phone service.

On the other hand, the massive download speeds now available using ADSL and cable modems are excellent for Web browsing, downloading content intensive web pages, maybe some files or other downloads and so forth. Hence these technologies are excellent for what they were designed for, but alas they're not well designed for voice over IP or business class VoIP phone service.

When It Doesn't Work – Why Not?

So why is this? Well, voice over IP relies as much on the ability to upload or "push" the voice packets to the Internet so that they can reach their destination in a timely manner, as it does on having adequate download speeds available.

For this reason we're generally looking for a very robust and bulletproof "synchronous" connection to the Internet so as to allow us to have adequate upstream or upload bandwidth and a "clean" pathway for our voice packets to travel back and forth between us and the party that we have called and are talking to.

Can I Use ADSL Or Cable Modems?

Let's start with the fact there are times ADSL, cable modems and even the occasional satellite Internet connection are appropriate for doing business VoIP or voice over IP.

In a general sense the times these technologies meet the need is when they are:

• Providing a VoIP connection for a small number of people generally no more than two or maybe three concurrent phone calls in conjunction with limited Web browsing and e-mail. If you also have large Internet needs like e-mail or web servers on site or a large number of users over the two or three concurrent calls mentioned above, the upload bandwidth on VoIP ADSL simply isn't generally going to be adequate.

• Implemented with a quality VoIP ADSL or cable modem Internet Service Provider (ISP).

• Implemented with an "edge device" to shape the IP traffic on your Local Area Network, assuring the VoIP packets get priority.

• Tested by you, the end-user to assure upload capacity, low latency, jitter and packet loss. Of course it would be nice to test the connection before you buy expensive equipment or switch to VoIP from an existing landline connection. See my broadband connection test page to actually test your connection.

• Scalable. If your business is planning on growing past the current number of users fairly quickly and hence the acceptable number of concurrent telephone calls on the VoIP ADSL connection, it would be nice to assure your existing Internet connection's UPLOAD BANDWIDTH can be increased if necessary to handle the growth.

• Affordable. I've seen many small and SOHO business owners buy a bunch of expensive equipment and telephone handsets trying to save money on long-distance or local phone service. Then they discover they have to beef up their Internet connection in order to make it all work. When it's all said and done sometimes they're paying the same amount they could have paid to the local phone company for business-class landlines with unlimited long-distance!

Do You Have What It Takes?
Try A Broadband Connection Test

Believe it or not, there are more than a couple of transport protocols used in doing VoIP. I know it's hard to imagine that the VoIP gearhead geeks have made it complicated, but believe me they have.

For this reason there are in a general sense more than a couple ways to end up with your VoIP not work correctly, but don't sweat this too much, if you visit my Broadband Connection Test Page it will quickly and easily diagnose anything that you've got going on at your end of the connection to make sure that you understand what the problems are.

If you still have problems after testing your broadband connection, visit my Contact E-Dude Page and we'll see if I can sort it out with you.

Many times we simply need to have a better, synchronous full-duplex business-class Internet connection, which believe it or not really isn't that much more expensive when you consider that your business reputation is at stake.

VoIP ADSL, Cable Modems
Tin Cans & String, All The Same...

So what should be noted is that the fundamentals outlined above apply to not only VoIP ADSL but also the vast majority of DSL or "best effort" broadband options in general including cable modem (it uses a different technology than DSL) and also any kind of wireless or inexpensive small business or residential Internet connection.

Again visit the VoIP Problems Pageand VoIP Tutorial Pages to understand why it is that you generally get what you pay for with regard to these types of connections.

You may need to prepare additional budget for increased costs on a monthly basis to assure a quality Internet connection.

Problems Once And For All!

Again visit my VoIP Problems page to learn a little bit more about oversubscription and how it affects VoIP phone service. Simply because you have a synchronous connection, or a connection that has the same upload speed as download speed, does not necessarily mean that you have a quality, clean connection to the Internet that has been properly groomed to provide the Quality Of Service (QOS) required for a business-class phone call.

If you haven't yet visited my VoIP tutorial to learn the basics of when and where VoIP business phone service can be successfully utilized to increase your Return On Investment (ROI) and decrease Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), I would suggest you visit it at some point.
