The Value Of Experience

Years ago, gas stations had mechanics and actual garages to work on cars.

So the story goes that a husband and wife are driving along the highway when their car starts acting up. They manage to make it to a service station out in the middle of nowhere just as the car gives one last sputter and dies.

Coasting into the station, they are relieved to see a wiry old mechanic wiping his hands as he peers in their direction.

"What seems to be the problem?" the old man asks the husband.

The husband responds "Well we need you to look at the engine; it started sputtering a while back, and then simply died just now"

After they pushed the car into the garage, the old man wandered around the front end of the vehicle asking a number of questions.

"Did it make a high pitched noise before it started sputtering?" and similar questions lead the old man to eventually take a small hammer out and hit the side of the carburetor three times.

"Go ahead and start her up" says the old man, sounding supremely confident.

The young husband hops in the car and turns the key. The car roared to life with a great belch of blue smoke from the tailpipe, eventually settling down to a smooth purr.

Amazed by this seemingly simple fix, the young husband says "Well thanks so much, please let me know how much I owe you" fully expecting the old mechanic to simply waive him off and send them on their way.

The old man says "well, you look like a nice young couple, let's keep it simple and say $50.00"

"WHAT!" spews the young man "$50 for 5 minutes of work! Why, that's outrageous, how can you live with yourself charging people that kind of money?"

"Well, I can explain that pretty simply young man" says the old codger "Let me write it down here on this itemized bill so you can see what's involved, and what a fine value you've received here today at my shop"

So the mechanic wipes his hands again, grabs a pencil and invoice book and starts writing. Here's what the invoice said he hands the young husband, who then readily paid the bill realizing he had indeed gotten value that was unavailable anywhere, any less expensively.

INVOICE

Asking questions about broken car $4.00
Knocking on engine $1.00
Knowing where to knock $45.00

TOTAL $50.00
