Broadband Speed Test And Tools To Diagnose VoIP Problems And Troubleshoot VoIP ADSL.

A broadband speed test is critical in diagnosing VoIP problems and troubleshooting VoIP ADSL and often an easy way to determine issues with existing VoIP phone service.

Using my broadband speed test as a VoIP speed test will assure a robust "business class" broadband connection and adequate upstream bandwidth when dealing with VoIP service, an imperative!

By the way, if the test below shows you don't have enough bandwidth, and if you're a business user, you might want to Contact me by filling out this form.

There is nothing worse than purchasing VoIP phone service or a broadband phone system only to learn that an existing or recently purchased broadband connection is inadequate to support a level of service that most of us would consider business class.

So here then are a few terms to become familiar with in understanding my broadband speed test and broadband connection test.

MOS, Man! A.K.A. Mean Opinion Score

In the enterprise business world, MOS is the Mean Opinion Score, a way of measuring the quality of a VoIP telephone call so as to compare various VoIP connections or technologies. This is the industry standard numeric measure and is scored between one and five, with five being the highest quality.

Generally VoIP phone service calls are measured repeatedly at the receiving end and averaged Mean Opinion Scores are then utilized to assure continuing VoIP service quality.

Business VoIP phone service with a MOS score below 3.5 are considered below "toll" quality, i.e. that of a regular wireline telephone call available from a local service provider.

In a Small Office / Home Office (SOHO) or small business environment we would not generally be utilizing mean opinion score as it's too burdensome to test. My Test will approximate a MOS score however.

Guess Who Knows What Your VoIP Sounds Like? 'Yo Mamma!

So in the end, how your VoIP sounds is all somewhat subjective, and too many times only will be judged by the people you're talking to, i.e. your customers and vendors and others.

Because of this it's absolutely imperative that you're sure your VoIP phone service has adequate bandwidth and is from a reputable provider. Use my VoIP speed test as a broadband speed test and then my broadband connection test to test the speed and quality of your internet connection.

Everything comes down to how your VoIP is operating at any given time of the business day, which can be influenced by many different factors. Take a look at my VoIP tutorial and VoIP problems pages for more information on this issue.

So Can I Use My Existing Internet Connection - Or Not?

My broadband speed test and broadband connection test can assist you in determining if you have a VoIP service problem and indicate whether you have adequate upload and download bandwidth available as well as measuring jitter, packet loss and latency. All of these measurements determine in a general sense how your VoIP will sound.

Generally any "best effort" type of internet service such as VoIP ADSL, cable modems and other small-business offerings unfortunately offer a wide variety when it comes to class of service, which will dramatically impact Quality Of Service or QOS.

Because of this, for larger small-business implementations with over three or four simultaneous phone calls, VoIP ADSL or business cable modems are rarely going to be adequate with regard to the upstream or upload bandwidth.

If You Have A Bunch Of Concurrent Calls,
You Need Good Providers

So remember that most residential and "business-class" VoIP ADSL and best effort type Internet connections are going to be woefully inadequate with regard to upstream bandwidth for larger applications.

The reason for this is they are designed to provide high speed DOWNLOADS from the Internet to your network, rather than a symmetrical full-duplex exchange of data, as exists in our need for a quality VoIP connection.

Test, Test, Test, All Day Long

It's important to test your bandwidth regularly, especially at different times of the day if you're using VoIP ADSL or another "best effort" type Internet service. The reason for this is that these networks are generally tremendously oversubscribed by the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) delivering the service.

This means that at any given time of the day, as more users come on to the service and start using the Internet bandwidth more and more, your connection to the Internet will suffer with regard to latency, jitter and packet loss. Take a look at my VoIP problems page to learn more.
